We harvest slow-growing Montana trees with decades of annual rings, so there is a ring for every year of service — then set that slice under sapphire crystal and engrave the badge into the grain.
A shadow box holds what the department issued. This holds the time they spent. Each ring on the dial is one year of the tree's life, laid down while they were working — wide in the good years, tight and dark in the hard ones. Hand crafted in Missoula, Montana since 2018.

A ring for every year they served.
Every dial is cut from a single slice of high-altitude Montana Douglas-fir. We select trees old enough that the rings cover a full career — a 1.5″ sapling from our forest restoration work can carry fifty years of growth. Count them.
In the words of Herman Hesse, one can read a tree's whole history in the luminous inscribed disk of its trunk: the narrow years and the luxurious years, the attacks withstood, the storms endured. That is why this works as a retirement gift and a plaque does not.
Underneath sits a Swiss-made Harley Ronda quartz movement in a 43 mm stainless steel case with a sapphire crystal, on a leather band. It is built to be worn every day, not put in a drawer.

A phone snapshot of the badge, patch or unit insignia is all we need — we redraw it as clean line art for the laser. Don't have one? Tell us the department and we'll help.

Approve the mock-up.
You see a rendering of the exact dial — emblem, rank, badge number, sworn-in and retirement dates — before anything is cut. Change it as many times as you like.

We cut the wood.
The dial is cut from a Douglas-fir round, engraved, sealed and set under sapphire crystal.

It ships in the presentation box.
Mounted on a slab of the same tree inside a cherry veneer box, with a card explaining the rings — so it reads right when they open it in front of everyone.

Send your badge once. We draw it, you approve it, and that artwork stays on file — so every retirement after the first is a two-week reorder with a new name, rank and set of dates. No design work again, and the piece looks identical year to year.
Under the $400 tax line
The IRS excludes qualified length-of-service awards from an employee's income up to $400 per year and names watches as a qualifying item. Our pricing sits under that ceiling on purpose.
If your award cap is lower
Plenty of contracts cap a department-funded award below our price. The agency covers its share and the shift closes the gap — twelve officers at roughly $33 each. Nobody breaks policy.
Paperwork, same day
W-9, certificate of insurance, vendor registration, net-30 invoicing and quotes formatted for a purchase order. We're a real Montana business, not a drop-shipper.
Volume pricing starts at three pieces. Academy classes, FOP lodges, VFW and American Legion posts, and union quartermasters — tell us how many you hand out in a year and we'll quote the standing order.

Questions
Before you ask
Can you engrave our department badge or unit insignia?
Yes — that is the whole point. Send a photo of the badge, patch or seal and we redraw it as line art for the laser. If your agency has a policy on reproducing its seal, send it to us and we'll work inside it, or engrave rank, unit and dates instead.
How long does it take?
Two to three weeks from the moment you approve the mock-up. Tell us the ceremony date before you pay and we'll tell you honestly whether we can make it rather than take the order and hope.
Can several of us split the cost?
Yes, and it's the most common way these get bought. Twelve people at roughly $33 each covers a badge-engraved watch. Federal ethics rules specifically permit employees to pool contributions for a retirement gift, and most state and municipal codes mirror that. Email us and we'll set it up.
Do you do fire, EMS, corrections or federal agencies?
Yes. Maltese crosses, company numbers, agency shields and full department seals. If you can send us a picture of it, we can engrave it.
What if something goes wrong with it?
Send it back. We have repaired and re-shipped watches years after purchase. It's a small shop in Missoula — there is no warranty department to fight with.
