The Tree Ring 40-Year watch is a 40th anniversary or 40th birthday gift for him made from a slice of a Montana Douglas-fir with exactly 40 annual growth rings, one for every year since 1986. The origin year 1986 is burned beneath the center of the dial, and you can add initials or custom back engraving. Handmade in Missoula, Montana, with a Seiko VH31 mecha-quartz movement, sapphire crystal, and a 43 mm stainless steel case in silver or gold-tone. From $310. 40 years is the ruby anniversary, and this is the gift that counts every one of them.
A perfect birthday or anniversary gift for 40 years that is certain to be cherished! We found a small tree that was established in 1986, and created this stunning watch using a thin slice from the tree. Each of the 40 annual rings represents one year of the tree's life. In the words of Herman Hesse "one can read its whole history in the luminous inscribed disk of its trunk: in the rings of its years, its scars, all the struggle, all the suffering, all the sickness, all the happiness and prosperity stand truly written, the narrow years and the luxurious years, the attacks withstood, the storms endured."
Watches are crafted from Douglas-fir trees harvested from forests of western Montana. The wood dials are hand selected for their beauty and unique annual tree ring history. With 40 years of growth rings on each timepiece, hours, minutes, and seconds are juxtaposed against years. Underneath each wood dial sits a Seiko VH31 Mecha-Quartz movement. The watch is enclosed by a high quality stainless steel case and a sapphire crystal. The origin year of the chronology, 1986, is marked near the center of the tree. This year represents when the tree was small seedling. A slice of a tree is a snapshot of its life history. As such, every tree is unique and will vary in appearance. Hand crafted in the Big Sky Country of Montana.
Dial and engraving options. Every watch dial is a real cross-section of a Douglas-fir that we cut, dry, sand and finish by hand in Missoula, Montana. Choose the case color (silver or gold-tone stainless steel), then the dial: the standard tree ring dial, the dial with the origin year 1986 burned beneath the pith, the dial with initials (one set or two, e.g. J + D), or year and initials together. Custom back engraving is available on any watch. Enter the initials and any back text in the personalization box at checkout.

Frequently asked questions
Is the dial a real tree?
Yes. Every dial is a cross-section of a Douglas-fir we cut, dry, sand and finish by hand in Missoula, Montana. This one has 40 annual rings, so the tree started growing in 1986.
Why is a 40-ring watch a good 40th anniversary or birthday gift?
Each ring is one year of the tree's life, so the dial holds the same 40 years you are celebrating. The origin year 1986 is burned into the wood as a reference point. It also happens to be the traditional ruby anniversary gift.
Can I choose a different year or add initials?
Yes. The standard dial has no year; the year dial has 1986 burned beneath the pith; you can add one or two sets of initials above the center; and custom back engraving is available on any watch. Choose the options above and enter the text in the personalization box.
What movement and crystal does it use?
A Seiko VH31 mecha-quartz movement with a sweeping seconds hand, battery type 371 (SR920SW), under a sapphire crystal. The case is 43 mm stainless steel, silver or gold-tone, with a 22 mm leather band and 50 m water resistance.
How long does it take to make and ship?
Each watch is made to order. Most ship within 3 to 5 business days. Rush requests are welcome, just message us before ordering.
Will it look exactly like the photos?
No two trees are alike. Ring spacing, bark, and grain vary, so your dial will be similar to the photos but unique to your tree. Every watch comes in a gift box with a card explaining the ring count.
